With the help of henry stanley, King leopold II of Belguim was able to take over the congo river area
The Berlin confrence was held. Its goal was to divide up Africa amongst themselves. The rules of this meeting stated that any european nation could take over a part of Africa as long as it was not previously claimed by anoter nation
The battle of omdurman- the british army faced the sudanese at Omdurman have 26 machine guns. The british casulties were 368 while the Sudanese totled 11000. This victory opened the door for british into sudan.
European powers begin to expand and begin their colonization of Africa

Because of the abundent recources in Africa, which were in high demand in the rest of the world, Africa was the target of many european colonies
Through their suprior technology, the europeans were able to take over most of Africa (all but Ethiopia) and was able to harness these recources to increase the wealth of their countries
Rubber trees were espically in demand because of the rubber that they produced and the fact that rubber could not be produced in any other way at this time.

Missionaries came to Africa to impose religion
Dr.David Livingston, a scottish minister traveled around central and southern africa for a location for mission posts
Boers thought God wanted them to concure africa
They believed that their success in the Great Treck was due to the will of God

The British end the African slave trade
Boers (dutch for farmers) came to Africa and used the land for farming and ranching
The english established their laws and language in the Afrikaner society
Because of the end of Slavery in 1833, there was less labor to work on the farms
The great treckers and the native african population began to clash, causing conflict
African natives are forced to fight to fight in the African war (boer war 1899-1902)

imperialism began to spread to Africa as Europeans began to form colonies. They imposed rule in these colonies in two ways, cconcessionary companies and direct rule

With advancements in firepower such as muskets, cannons and machine guns, which enabled them to overtake their African enmies easily, who were meerly armed with sticks and spears.
With all of this advanced technology, Eruropeans were able to overtake all of Africa except for Ethiopia.

Africa is located near most of the major european powers, and is surronded on almost all sides with water, making it a prime and easy target for imperialist colonization
Africa also had many rivers, making communication and travel easier than on foot
They were also able to build rail roades to ensure safer and faster travel from place to place
